How to turn off “please obey all traffic regulations” and become a happy Toyota or Lexus driver again

We're showing you how to switch off Betty, which is what Toyota's "please obey all traffic regulations" voice warning has come to be known.

Bye, bye Betty!

We got asked how to turn off Toyota’s “please obey all traffic regulations” speed limit voice alert, and we found the solution!

The warning voice is part of Toyota’s Safety Sense Suite and Lexus’s Safety System +. It tells you off rather firmly whenever you do something that could be unsafe. Like going even just a couple of km/h over the speed limit for just a few seconds.

Skip ahead to the solution

Now, we don’t condone speeding or any other unsafe behaviours on the road here at OwnerDrive. That being said, we think Toyota’s Safety Sense Suit is a bit too eager in telling you off, to where the warning becomes a driver distraction.

We asked our resident car expert – Jonathan – to show you how to switch off Betty – as the “please obey all traffic regulations” voice warning is known.

Jonathan is a patient guy… He and his wife drove around with Betty for a year before they switched her off.

“We certainly found her annoying at first, but then I think we go used to having her along for the drive,” Jonathan says.

“But when we invited another Toyota owner, Anthony, along to do an owner review of his Toyota RAV4, he showed us how to do it. There’s not much to it at all.”

In fact, explains Jonathan, it just takes a little bit of a deeper dive into the settings menu.

Simple steps to disable “please obey all traffic regulations”

You can watch the process in our video above or over at YouTube, or you can just follow the steps below. These steps should work on most recent Toyotas.

  1. Click the menu button, then tap setup
  2. Go to the navigation menu, then detailed navigation settings
  3. Scroll down and go to speed limit settings
  4. Switch the toggles to off for each road type
    • Alternatively, adjust the speed limit tolerance for each road type. This is how far above the speed limit you want to go before Betty tells you off.
  5. Hit the back arrow to exit, then hit the home button to get back to the home screen

How to enable Betty again

If you think you need the “please obey all traffic regulations” warning in order to avoid speeding tickets, it’s easy to switch Betty back on again.
